Personal Development: Do You Focus On The Good At Work?

Personal Reflection Exercises

What do I choose to focus on? Is it the good around me?

This is a great exercise for just about anyone. As a career management expert, my perspective is on the workplace. Is your focus on the good around you at work? It can be tough – especially nowadays. There’s always too much work and too little time. Read on and consider your outlook…

I opt to focus on everything that is good around me.

There are two ways to look at every situation while I am at work. I opt to focus on the brighter side of things, rather than the negative. I brighten up my day with a cheerful smile rather than a critical eye.

When I look at my coworkers, I try to see them in the way that they hope to be seen. Little nuisances in others’ personalities can be tough for me to ignore – but I do. I focus on the good in each of my coworkers and overlook their imperfections.

I realize just how lucky I am when I sit down and take stock of my good fortune. Just looking at my family, health, and friends helps me realize how truly fortunate I am – knowing I have a job when others do not, I am even more grateful. In fact, the more I look for things to be appreciative about, the more I find.

Even on my crummiest day at work, I consider myself fortunate. I realize that life is filled with things money cannot buy – but I have a steady income and money coming in and that is more than many can say these days.

I choose to be positive. It is a conscious choice I make daily that allows me to keep my soul clear of judgment and bitterness. When I have a really rotten day at work, I am thankful I have a job that provides for my family. Positivity is all about perspective.

I do my best to surround myself with other positive people so that their cheerful attitude rubs off on me. By keeping company with optimistic coworkers, I am encouraged to seek out the good. This is especially effective in times when I want to have a pity party.

Today, I choose to be grateful for all that I have. I reject every impulse to criticize. I do away with judgment and steer clear of bitterness.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. Who is my most optimistic coworker?
  2. What is going well at work?
  3. What is going well in my life right now?
  4. What are some things I could attempt to see with a different perspective?
