Interview Coach: Your Interview Prep, Don’t Forget To Follow Up, Step 5

This is the last in a series of posts on interview preparation. If you’ve made it through the interview process recently, congrats.

Most people do not send out a thank you note after they interview. I am not sure why they don’t – could be because they don’t know that it is a great way of positioning yourself at your prospective employer’s top of mind. Or could be they’re not sure what to say in a note.

Either way, it is really a good habit to get in. You can either send a letter that you have printed from your computer or you can send a handwritten note. Whichever you choose, send it out no more than a day or two tops after your interview. And, if you have interviewed with several hiring managers in a group setting, it is appropriate for you to send a note to each one of them.

  • It would be a good idea for you to write everyone’s name down before leaving so you remember who to send your thank you notes to.
  • If you didn’t get the names, you might want to call the company and ask either the receptionist or someone in HR for the names – you decide if that is appropriate.

In any case, customize your note to the job for which you are applying. Express your interest in the job, how you’re a perfect fit and why you’re the best candidate. You get the picture.

If you’re not taking this last step, you’re missing out on an opportunity to sell yourself into the position. You are also missing out on the chance to close the sale.

Chances are your competitors are sending out a thank you note. What if the hiring manager is having trouble deciding between you and one other candidate? If your competitor sent in a thank you letter and you decided against it, your inaction might have you missing out on the job of a lifetime. Sure you want to chance it?
